Detrovana
Detrovana is a project that presents a visual comparison study between Detroit and Havana. I visit the cities regularly and have become interested in the connections, similarities and shared decline/renewal aesthetic. Both are urban environments that demand and benefit from courage and tenacity within their populations. They share a strong past connection in commerce and now face the future by moving strongly towards renewal through adventurous urbanism informed by the arts.
These images represent a series of large studio paintings with subject matter that blends the streetscapes of both cities. Cultural, physical and human images from Detroit and Havana collide and are woven together. The imagery is derived from my own photography, referencing communist propaganda art and mid-century commercial livestyle illustrations. The work is ongoing.
